Missed Connections, Mapped

0

by thepleasurechest

Where are Americans looking for love? A new infographic published in Psychology Today has some answers. Researcher Dorothy Gambrell analyzed the 100 most recent “Missed Connections” ads on Craigslist in all 50 states.

She found that the vast majority of the ads were placed by men: 59% were men looking for women and 27% were men looking for men. Just 13% of the ads were women looking for men and only 1% were women looking for women.

Even more interesting was where people saw the object of their affection. As Tracy Clark Flory observed in Salon, the most popular location in 15 states was Walmart. In California, it was 24 Hour Fitness. In Illinois, it was the train. And in New York, it was the subway. Do our customers in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York identify with this pattern?

40 year olds were most likely to have spotted that special someone at a strip club or adult bookstore (we think that means us), while 30 year olds crossed paths in a bar. 20 year olds met in ice cream shops. Cute!

Have you ever placed a Missed Connections ad? Did the person respond? Tell us in the comments.

The Male Birth Control You’ve Never Heard Of

by thepleasurechest

Have you heard of RISUG? It’s a revolutionary birth control method for men. RISUG is an acronym for reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance; it’s a quick, relatively painless procedure developed by Indian scientist Sujoy Guha.

In a traditional vasectomy, the vas deferens is severed. In Guha’s procedure, the vas deferens is injected with a nontoxic polymer that renders any sperm passing through sterile for up to 10 years. When you’re reading to make babies, you simply inject a solution of baking soda and water to flush out the polymer. Can it really be that simple? And why isn’t RISUG a household word?

On Valentine’s Day, the Museum of Sex introduced New York City to the Fun Factory Stronic, a remarkable new toy. Don’t call it a vibrator. It’s a Pulsator!

Over on our How To blog, we just posted a great video of the event, including an interview with our own Brandon B, singing the Stronic’s praises. But we can think of no better demonstration of this unique toy than the short clip above. Place your bets!

Sinnamon Love on Beinga Black Feminist Pornographer

1

by thepleasurechest

A few years ago, I sat on a panel with notable feminist academics and a feminist pornographer—all of whom were well-respected. I was put on the spot when asked, “Do you consider yourself and your work to be feminist?” I didn’t know how to answer. I tried to steady my voice as I replied, “I’ve never really given that any thought.” The other panelists gave their view of my work and what they knew about me… but the question, which I had to answer for myself, remained: “Am I a feminist?”

Today’s must-read is a revealing article by Sinnamon Love on her journey in the porn industry. Check it out.
