Keeping Up With the Joneses

sex

“Having more sex makes us happy, but thinking we are having more sex than other people makes us even happier.”

That’s the finding of a new study by sociologists at the University of Colorado. Researchers looked at surveys of life satisfaction from over 15,000 people and found, not surprisingly, that the more sex people had, they happier they were. But the most interesting observation was that people’s happiness was directly affected by their perception of how much sex other people were having.

“If someone is having sex two to three times a month but believes their peers are having sex weekly, their probability of reporting a higher level of happiness falls by about 14 per cent.”

To some of us, sex, like many other things, ends up being a competition. The recipe for true happiness might be to enjoy what we have and ignore those sounds coming from next door. They’re probably just watching porn anyways, right?

Listening to Music is As Satisfying As Sex

music

Do you like to be aurally aroused? A new study confirms that listening to new music stimulates the same pleasure response in the brain as having sex. The scientists were studying brain activity in an effort to predict people’s music buying patterns.

“What makes music so emotionally powerful is the creation of expectations. Activity in the nucleus accumbens is an indicator that expectations were met or surpassed, and in our study we found the more activity we see in this brain area while people are listening to music, the more money they are willing to spend.”

The article notes that this is similar to what happens in the brain during other pleasurable activities.

Similar connections were also seen between the nucleus accumbens and other brain areas involved in high level sequencing, complex pattern recognition and assigning emotional and reward value to stimuli.

In other words, the brain assigns value to music through the ancient reward circuitry of dopamine which reinforces behaviours absolutely necessary for our survival – such as eating and sex.

These connections might explain the popularity of adult toys like the Club Vibe and Better than Chocolate which convert music into pleasurable vibrations and also why certain songs just seem to put us in the mood.

Racism in the Porn Industry

porn

Is the porn industry racist? That’s the headline of this interesting article in The Root, which talks to porn legend Lexington Steele on the challenges faced by black porn performers. One of the biggest issues is that many white female performers will not do scenes with black men. These biases exist in spite of the enormous popularity of interracial porn. Steele explains:

“It’s definitely something that exists, and I think it’s something that’s built within the fabric of the industry, because if you look at the individuals that are in positions of authority over some of the white females, the ones governing them are the ones implementing this practice of no interracial.”

The article goes on to discuss other problems encountered by people of color in the industry. Black women are typically paid less than white women, a claim backed up by porn star Misty Stone. To read more, click on over to The Root.

streetview

A great photograph is all about timing. This Australian couple saw one of Google’s Street View cars approaching and decided to photobomb the world. Well played. But not everyone is thrilled with our brave new world of omnipresent cameras. Some strip clubs are already pre-emptively banning customers from wearing Google Glass.

The Origami Condom

0

by thepleasurechest

Bill Gates wants to promote sexual health by reinventing the latex condom. To accomplish this, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is offering $100,000 to the designer with the best idea. And they may have found a winner in the Origami Condom.

Creator and company founder, Danny Resnic, told The Huffington Post. “We are trying to create a condom that feels great and is much closer to the real deal to encourage people to use them.”

Origami Condoms look like a hybrid of the traditional condom and a male masturbation sleeve. The name comes from “origami,” the Japanese art of paper-folding, and sure enough, the segments of the condom unfold as it is rolled down a penis. They also move during intercourse, stroking the shaft and adding stimulation for the wearer.

Initial trials have been very positive, and the company has already attracted investors and condom makers who want license the design. Meanwhile, Resnic is working on an improvement to the female condom and developing the world’s first condom for anal intercourse. We’re curious to see what he comes up with next. Would you try the Origami Condom?
