Google Glass Porn Is Here

0

by thepleasurechest

Even though Google has officially banned porn apps for Google Glass, they can’t stop the adult industry from trying out a new toy. Last week, Xbiz and MiKandi released a trailer for the first porn video shot on Google Glass. With its POV possibilities, Glass could revolutionize porn or become just another fad like 3D. After watching this amusing video starring James Deen, we wonder if Google might be privately pleased that the capabilities of Glass are so prominently featured in the trailer. It’s practically an advertisement.

Jessica Drake Speaks Out

by thepleasurechest

jessica-drake

“As a woman, I don’t like someone telling me what to do with my body, and as a performer, I feel very much the same way.”

That’s our friend and occasional guest educator Jessica Drake in a wonderful profile on CNN.com (!) Read about how Drake got involved in porn, her feelings about California’s Measure B and the stigma associated with being an adult film star on CNN’s site. Also, be sure to check out the behind-the-scenes photo gallery shot by Chris McPherson.

Stoya’s Straight Talk for Aspiring Porn Stars

So you want to be a porn star. Hold up. Before you quit your job, take five to read this helpful wisdom from Stoya, (who is something of an expert).

Unless the whole of civilization as we know it is destroyed, any nude or sexually explicit images will remain available on the internet in some way forever. Decide whether the chance to have sex with that one particular performer or have that professionally videotaped gang bang is worth the potential that every single person you know now or ever will know in the future will see it.

This is good advice and there’s much more at Vice.

Sagat Announces Porn RetirementFrom Happiest Place on Earth

French adult film actor, producer and director Francois Sagat has retired. The porn polymath has given few details about his decision, announced in this mysterious video shot outside Sleeping Beauty’s Castle in Disneyland. On his blog, Sagat says:

I have many projects coming out. I have been very busy and not posting here as much. I want to tell you everything. But I do not plan to make porn again. No regrets. Just new goals.

Incubus 2 was my last porn but will not be my last movie. Good to always go out on your high note and leave people wanting more. And more you will get, just not more of the same.

sagat

Can we expect Sagat to cross over into mainstream movies?

Porn Long Reads

stoya

Yes, sometimes we do actually read the internet for the articles. As proof, we’d like to point you to a couple of great pieces we read recently. First, there’s this amazing profile of Stoya, the internet’s favorite porn star. Kudos to Amanda Hess for showing us another side to one of our heroes.

Also this week, we read “What Do You Desire,” Emily Witt’s marvelous essay about San Francisco, modern love, porn and utopia. Witt uses  her visits to the sets of Kink.com porn shoots to ruminate on her own search for romantic fulfillment. It’s a long read, but worth your time.

If you like reading heady, thoughtful pieces on porn, you’re in luck. Routledge has just announced a call for papers for Porn Studies. It’s described as “the first dedicated, international, peer-reviewed journal to critically explore those cultural products and services designated as pornographic and their cultural, economic, historical, institutional, legal and social contexts.” It’s about time.

Adult Film Industry Organizes Against Proposed State Law Mandating Condoms in Porn

0

by thepleasurechest

unclesamLast November, Los Angeles voters approved Measure B, a law requiring condoms for all porn shoots in LA County. While that law faces appeal, there’s a new challenge to California’s adult film industry. Assembly Bill 332 would enforce a statewide requirement for condoms on all adult film sets.

Our friends at the Free Speech Coalition argue that, if passed, AB 332 would drive the industry out of California. There’s some evidence for this. Since the passage of Measure B, applications for porn film permits in Los Angeles have plummeted, with productions moving to nearby Ventura County. In LA, “only two permits have been issued for pornographic filming so far this year, far off pace for an industry that typically gets about 500 permits annually.”

Aside from the economic impact of a ban, the FSC emphasizes that the adult industry already has effective protocols to protect performers.

“Between April of 2006 and December of 2012 there have been 46,283 new cases of HIV reported in the state of California.  During that same time period only two performers contracted HIV—off set—in their personal lives.  No transmission of HIV has occurred on an adult set since 2004 nationwide.”

They also point out that the bill interferes with a pending lawsuit filed by Vivid Entertainment, challenging the constitutionality of Measure B. Rather than pass yet another law making it harder for the adult industry, the state should wait to see what happens with the suit against Measure B.

The FSC is encouraging friends of the adult film industry to contact members of the Assembly State Labor Committee by phone, fax or email, asking them to oppose AB332 when it comes up for up a vote this Wednesday. The call to action, along with suggested talking points and contact information for the committee members can be found here.

Racism in the Porn Industry

Is the porn industry racist? That’s the headline of this interesting article in The Root, which talks to porn legend Lexington Steele on the challenges faced by black porn performers. One of the biggest issues is that many white female performers will not do scenes with black men. These biases exist in spite of the enormous popularity of interracial porn. Steele explains:

“It’s definitely something that exists, and I think it’s something that’s built within the fabric of the industry, because if you look at the individuals that are in positions of authority over some of the white females, the ones governing them are the ones implementing this practice of no interracial.”

The article goes on to discuss other problems encountered by people of color in the industry. Black women are typically paid less than white women, a claim backed up by porn star Misty Stone. To read more, click on over to The Root.

Conner Habib on Gay Porn & LGBT Visibility

1

by thepleasurechest

habib

Gay porn star Conner Habib posted a great article today about the relationship between porn and LGBT equality. Two months ago,  Habib, a former college instructor, was asked by queer students to speak at their community college’s Sex Week. But when the school’s president learned that Habib planned to link the LGBT struggle to porn, his appearance was cancelled. This was especially disappointing because it was the students themselves who had asked Habib to visit.

Habib argues that there’s a connection between access to gay porn and positive self identity for gay people, especially for those living in small towns or homophobic societies.

When a gay man lives somewhere where his identity is threatened, it’s clear how sex – including pornography – and sexuality are intertwined. His sexual imagination, which is criminalized, matches the sexual images of gay pornography (which are also criminalized). Since acting out his imagination through sex would be to risk his life, the access to the images is safer. The images, created by gay men wherever it’s legal to create them, provide empowerment and diminish alienation.

Harry Reems, RIP

by thepleasurechest

reems

Today we learned about the passing of porn legend Harry Reems who starred in the breakthrough adult film Deep Throat. Born Herbert Streicher, Reems, a former Marine, starred in over 100 adult features, but Deep Throat was his most notorious film. Reems was paid $100 for a day’s work on set. When the film’s release created a nationwide controversy, Reems was federally prosecuted “for conspiracy to distribute obscene material across state lines.” The conviction was later overturned.

Reems always wanted to cross over into mainstream movies and was even cast in Grease before being fired due to his past.

“Acting was my true love, and I buried that possibility by going into adult films,” Reems told Dave Itzkoff for a 2005 New York magazine piece. “The writing was on the wall. There was no place for me in conventional entertainment.”

In the 80s, Reems moved to Park City, got sober and reinvented himself as a real estate broker. Reems kept his porn name.

“The past, is the past,” he would tell clients.

Read his obituary at the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune.
