Transgender Day of Remembrance Writings: Memorializing, Listening, Taking Action

It’s Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day set aside to memorialize the people who have been killed over the last year because of anti-trans hatred and prejudice. If you’re interested in participating in a vigil, you can find one here.

In the meantime, we wanted to point you in the direction of a few of the best things we’ve read recently about Transgender Day of Remembrance, about people’s personal experiences, and/or about action you can take.

“TDOR 2014 Musings” from TransGriot
“…It is an opportunity for the trans community to raise awareness that we exist and these murders are happening. It gives an opportunity to partner with our allies, community build, grieve for our dead, and steel ourselves for the ongoing task to ensure that we do the necessary work to make the TDOR’s unnecessary.”

“Invisibility: Craving for Representation as a Trans Person of Color” from Black Girl Dangerous
“[My aunt] doesn’t know much about trans people – what she knows, she has learned from the media. First, she remembered that genital reconstruction surgery is expensive, and a privilege reserved for the upper classes. And second, she remembered that poor trans women of color are often assaulted and murdered, and that nobody seems to care. She was worried about me.”

“Remembering Us When We’re Gone, Ignoring Us While We’re Here: Trans Women Deserve More” from Autostraddle
“Don’t get me wrong, it’s important to honor those women who came before us, those women murdered by colonial patriarchy. But it seems like more often than not, the queer community at large is content with just remembering. We only hear about trans women after their deaths.”

The author of this piece also provides a great list of places to give your money if you want it to benefit trans women, as opposed to queer/LGBT causes at large.

“Transgender Day of Remembrance: Critique is Resistance; Resistance is Revolution” from Autostraddle
“I implore you to sit back and ask yourself how you contribute to the violence and injustice against trans women of color. How do you reinforce the marginalization and ostracism of myself and my sisters? It’s all fine that we become aware of our lives but we need more than for you to finally see that we are walking this Earth. We need you to hear us. We need you to sit quietly, take notes, and begin to conceptualize what a restructured system that is void of misogynist, racist, ableist, etc oppression would look like.”

According to TSER, Transgender Day of Visibility is “a day to show your support for the trans community. It aims to bring attention to the accomplishments of trans people around the globe while fighting cissexism and transphobia by spreading knowledge of the trans community. Unlike Transgender Day of Remembrance, this is not a day for mourning: this is a day to be empowered and get the recognition we deserve!”

Want to participate? Check out a local event, follow the #tdov hashtag, and/or check out Autostraddle’s list of 15 Ways To Let Trans People Know You See Them and Care.

Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, when we memorialize those who have been murdered over the last year because of anti-trans* hatred. The event is held this month every year in honor of Rita Hester, who was killed on November 28, 1998.

Vigils will take place all over the world, including New York, Chicago and West Hollywood. Find an event near you here.

We continue to celebrate our community, and we encourage you to read further and engage as much as you can in education and advocacy. Here are a few resources to start with:

Victory for Transgender Students in California

Yesterday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law that will require schools to allow transgender students access to the gender-segregated programs, activities and facilities that are appropriate to their gender identities. In other words, students’ eligibility for joining clubs and sports teams, their access to locker rooms and restrooms, and their state-mandated physical education classes will be determined by their stated gender identities, not by the sex listed on their birth certificates.

California is the first state in the nation to pass such a law, and we hope to see more states follow. It’s a big step in the right direction. You can read more about it here.

“Fucking Trans Women” is Sex Ed, Zine Style

fucking trans women

Today, Autostraddle features an interview with Mira Bellwether, author and illustrator of Fucking Trans Women, a zine about – you guessed it – trans women and sex. Bellwether describes Fucking Trans Women as “a how-to guide,” and it covers a wide variety of topics, from advice about approaching a partner, to diagrams of nerves in the body, to descriptions of specific sex acts. Says Bellwether,

One of the reasons this zine happened was that I got really sick of explaining things and teaching my lovers about my body during time that should have been spent having sex. When one of my lovers said that she wished she had an instruction manual for my body, I took that and responded to it pretty literally.

As consummate sex geeks, we appreciate her turning a teachable moment into a learning opportunity for the rest of us. Check out the full interview here. (NSFW)

Here’s great news for Chicago’s trans community. Organizers with Chicago House cut the ribbon on Monday for a brand new housing facility for the city’s trans population.

“This will set a new model and a new standard for other cities,” said Chicago House CEO, Rev. Stan J. Sloan during the morning ceremony.

The TransLife Center in Edgewater is the first of its kind in the country, with 9 bedrooms for residents and housing, employment and health services geared to Chicago’s trans folks.

Watch the video above to learn how the organizers at Chicago House converted a former AIDS hospice to a home for the city’s trans community.
