THIS ENTRY WAS POSTED ON November 1, 2024 BY THE PLEASURE CHEST.
2024 was a big year for sex toys. Womanizer traveled the country in their iconic pink truck this summer to spread sex positive education to the masses. The Los Angeles location of the Pleasure Chest was featured in an episode of Netflix’s hit series Nobody Wants This, a show about a woman who hosts a sex positive podcast. More and more lines and brands of sex toys have been popping up across general retail and convenience stores like Target and CVS, making the ownership of sex toys more accessible and their place in our culture more normalized. The Lovehoney Group (We-Vibe, Womanizer, Arcwave, Romp, Pjur) partnered with a food delivery service to offer its products for home delivery. Sex toys have even started to be included in merch drops from musical artists!
The normalization of sex toys and talking about sex in general in our culture has had a major impact that we would consider a net positive. Only maybe a decade ago, a little over 40% of women admitted to owning at least one sex toy. Now, that number is over 80% for women and 78% for Americans in general. That’s a big jump in just a few short years! The main demographic of sex toy buyers that’s most commonly targeted has typically been women between the age of 25 and 45, but recently other demographics have been emerging. There have been increases in folks over 50 purchasing sex toys. And with a more versatile selection available now, we’ve seen an increase in men and nonbinary folks making sex toy purchases as well. There’s room for everyone in the adult pleasure industry, and the products made available to us are finally catching up to this sentiment!
There is a downside to the normalization of sex toys, however. In late 2023, Shein began carrying sex toys on their site, a move eco-friendly toy brand Fun Factory coined as the ‘fast fashionization’ of sex toys. Temu, a similar online marketplace to Shein, wasn’t far behind in following Shein’s move. While it’s great that sex toys are becoming more widely available and more accessible to the general population, oversaturated marketplaces are generally not recommended to purchase them from. We’re all for affordability and convenience, but we also want to emphasize safety is just as much of an important factor when decided where to buy your sex toys. Even sites like Amazon and other third-party marketplaces can’t uphold warranties or guarantee quality and longevity.
(Of course, since you’re reading this blog, you probably don’t need to be convinced to purchase your pleasure products with a reputable retailer like us, or any other adult store that provides accessible education and body safe products in a judgement-free zone!)
What is National Sex Toy Day?
National Sex Toy Day is celebrated every year on November 4th. This day is meant to spread awareness of the benefits of self-love and pleasure. Many people celebrate by treating themselves to a new sex toy, but there are plenty of ways you can mark this special occasion without spending a dime!
You can show your current toy collection some love by spending some time giving them a good clean up. You can also break out an old favorite toy that you haven’t used in a while to reignite the flame. Another way to celebrate would be to use a toy with a partner that maybe you’ve never used together before to spice up your play. You can even use more than one toy at a time! There are plenty of possibilities. National Sex Toy Day is all about celebrating pleasure and ending the stigma against using sex toys in the first place. If you already use sex toys, you’re way ahead of the game!
For this year's National Sex Toy Day blog, we're highlighting some of the biggest and best sex toy releases and sex technology innovations of 2024. From affordable, portable fuck machines to various sex toys with new AI integration, the future of sex technology is here and better than ever, improving toys across the industry from the smallest bullet to the biggest rechargeable vibrating dildo!
Fuck Machines
The old days of fuck machines being cumbersome, expensive, heavy pieces of furniture are finally over! With the rise in the popularity of camming and adult social media platform apps like Only Fans, the adult toy industry has been tasked with meeting the challenge of making sex toys more versatile and connected to audiences.
Cam-friendly brands like Lovense have created a range of items that allow customers to control cam model’s toys from behind a screen for a fee. In the last few years, fuck machines have entered the chat (so to speak). Not only do customers want to add fuck machines to their growing personal collections of toys, audiences and fans of cam models want to see them in action. Now that more and more lightweight, portable options have appeared on the market, fuck machines have become more affordable, user-friendly and way more commonly used.

AI Integration and Interactive Toys
2024 was the year of Artificial Intelligence making its way into every industry across the board, and the adult toy industry has not been immune to its influence. Toy makers have long been trying to implement aspects of AI before the technology grew to what it has become today, e.g. incorporating virtual reality (more on that later) and the feature of connecting your favorite porn to your toy’s functionality. AI was just around the corner, waiting for the right technological advance. And now we have it! Kind of.
There aren’t tons of options as far as full-fledged AI goes (although people out there are really hard at work trying to make it a reality). But there are plenty of sex toys that offer interactive capabilities such as app compatibility, syncing with adult movies and video games, connecting with other toys so they’re operating on the same settings, and earning money when webcam viewers control the toy. Some even allow you to connect with interactive content available on your favorite porn star’s website, allowing you to get closer to them than ever!
The cons of AI are numerous (environmental factors, data privacy, expense, ethical concerns), but the demand for bringing it into the fold of sex toy tech is high regardless. It’s almost a guarantee we’ll see vast improvements in the implementation of AI in adult toys in the coming years and it might even end up being a common functionality addition. Just look at rechargeability—a feature that was relatively new only 10-12 years ago is now the standard practice. Surely AI features will follow suit and be the norm by 2035.

Virtual Reality
Virtual Reality (VR) has gained popularity in the last few years in the adult industry as innovative toy brands figure out more and more ways to allow customers to connect with their favorite adult film stars via their toys. It’s a natural progression from the crowd favorite app-enabled toys that let people use toys with their partners and with the cam models they pay to watch. The lesson here? People like using toys with other people! Virtual Reality functions allow for the perfect combination of the social aspects of partner play with the comfort and ease of solo sessions. Introverts and extroverts alike can enjoy the fruits of VR in the comfort of their own homes. What’s not to like?
The toys we’ve seen the most advance in this sort of technology is in strokers, a category which has also seen the biggest increase in AI and interactive capabilities. This has been an interesting twist in the adult toy world which normally sees the first implementations of new technologies put into toys designed for clitoral stimulation (for instance, the emergence of clitoral air pressure suction toys about 10 years ago which have only recently gotten stroker versions designed to stimulate penises). VR and similar new technologies are helping shift the tides to make modern sex toy innovations more equal across the board so everyone gets to experience the new and exciting functionalities being made available to us!

Climax Control, 3D Pleasure Air and Suction Tech
While this patented technology is specific to one brand, we’re sure to see different versions of it pop up in the coming years. Created by Womanizer in one of their latest Air Pleasure™ suction toy models in combination with their new standard 3D Pleasure Air motor, Climax Control allows you to manipulate not only the intensity and pattern of the toy’s suction settings but also the depth of the air waves as well, adding a completely new dimension to your experience.
As suction toys continue to skyrocket in popularity, nearly taking over the iconic bullet and rabbit style vibrators, it’s only a matter of time before we see more unique functionality being offered across the spectrum. We’re seeing suction and vibration more commonly combined into one toy, sometimes even in addition to thrusting or tongue-flicking features. And even better, a style of sex toy that was once inaccessible pricewise now comes in plenty of affordable options without compromising on the quality of the motor.

Grinding Toys
Grinding toys are a style of sex toy that has been around for a long time in various versions but has recently seen a massive resurgence, most likely due to the consumer desire to see more gender-neutral sex toys on the market. Anyone can use grinding toys and that come in so many styles; they’re versatile, easy to use and accessible. For some of them, all you have to do is sit on top of them while controlling a remote! This opens up a whole new world of sex toy fun for folks with mobility issues or folks who don’t enjoy standard sex toy options like insertables or handheld toys.
Usually involving some kind of pad, a grinding toy features a flat sometimes textured material that allows the user to grind on its surface. These versions include remotes that control the vibration patterns and intensity so you don’t have to mess with touching the toy at all during use. Other versions of grinding toys include bases that easily attach to the bottom of insertable dildos. They’re compatible with strap-on harnesses and allow the wearer to experience more stimulation options. There are also grinding toys that can attach to wands, letting the intense wand vibrations transfer through wide textured silicone to spread out the sensation for clitoral stimulation or even full body massages.

Eco-Friendly Options
The rise in concern about climate change and the desire for cleaner ingredients in just about everything has resulted in the increased demand for more eco-friendly products across industries, and the adult toy industry is no different. Consumers want their products to be as natural and body safe as possible and toy brand companies are delivering!
One downside to the adult toy industry is that regulation standards vary widely because most products are deemed ‘for novelty use only,’ which allows them to bypass some safety measures that would normally be required for products meant to put in, on and around your body. Luckily, many brands take body safety seriously despite it being easy not to, especially brands that offer long warranties and list the materials clearly on their packaging. Fun Factory, Lovehoney (Womanizer, We-Vibe, Romp, Pjur), Lelo, COTR (b-Vibe, Le Wand, Cowgirl), Lovense, New York Toy Collective, Je Joue, Dame, Love Not War and Tantus are just a few big brands with high-quality body safe materials at the forefront of their product creation.
Fun Factory has long been at the forefront of environmentally friendly practices, from their recyclable packaging to their sustainable and ethical business model. Now more brands are following suit, also implementing minimal recyclable packaging and plant-based plastics and rubbers. The brand Love Not War even created a line of toys that features multiple attachable shapes to go with one single motor so they can be easily switched out without consumers needing to buy more than one motor.
It's exciting to see different sex toy brands take the lead on environmentally conscious practices and being examples for the rest of the industry that still needs to catch up. There’s still a long way to go—namely figuring out how to safely recycle silicone toys with rechargeable batteries without making customers drive to appropriate recycling plants as well as figuring out the environmental cons of incorporating AI into toys more frequently—but it’s safe to say we’re far from the porous plastic rubber jelly style of toy that used to be the standard. Of course, these materials are still available to folks to buy (because some people still prefer it, and that’s fine!) but it’s nice to have a wide variety of options in the modern sex toy industry that are body safe and less harmful to the environment.

Most Popular Toys of the Year
Our list of the most popular toys of 2024 includes some standard classics that have been bestsellers for years now, but also some new items that have emerged in the last 18 months. The most popular toys reflect a customer base that is concerned with quality, body safe materials and ingredients and getting a good bang for your buck (literally!). Here’s a list of the top 20 toys Pleasure Chest customers are loving this year.
Magic Wands
The Magic Wand Rechargeable, Mini and Micro make up the top 3 spots in our most popular toys list. It’s not surprising, as the Original Magic Wand (#15) has been popular since the late 60s! Magic Wand loyalists have been craving new smaller rechargeable versions and the brand swiftly delivered in the last few years. The Micro was only released in late summer of 2023 and is already #3 on our bestsellers list! You can never go wrong with a Magic Wand, no matter what size and style you decide to go for.

We-Vibe Syncs
The new Sync (Sync 2 and Sync Go) models from We-Vibe have been extremely popular since they were released to fill in a price-point between the Match and the Chorus—similar C-shaped toys from We-Vibe’s wearable couple’s vibrator line. These newer models are designed to be more travel and budget friendly. The Sync Lite and Sync O are two additional Sync models that were released in recent years, expanding the range of hands-free couple’s vibes so there’s a little something for everyone.

Suction Toys
The InBloom Rosales (known notoriously as simply ‘The Rose’), the Svakom Pulse Lite Neo and the We-Vibe Melt are our top 3 most popular suction toys coming in at #6, #13 and #17 respectively. The popularity of the Rose speaks for itself, it went viral years ago and it continues to reign as a cute and compact budget-friendly introduction to suction toys. The Svakom Pulse Lite Neo is similar in price point and also includes an app-compatibility feature, making it a little more high-tech. We-Vibe’s Melt has been a bestseller since it was released in 2019.
