Wand-da and the Magic O

Wand-da and the Magic O

Today, most people own a Magic Wand or any wand from another brand for that matter. Magic Wand as a brand has become an icon all on its own since its creation. When people shop for adult toys, it is one of THE MOST requested items simply from the name alone. Wands as a whole are some of the most powerful adult toys that you can get on the market right now. They come in different sizes, power strengths, colors, and shapes. Even with all that fun sounding stuff, some folks are still hesitant to jump into wand play because of certain “myths” they may have heard from a friend or partner. I’m here to help debunk some of them and assure you that wands are just as fun as they look.

Myths & Legends

One thing that might steer folks from wanting to use a Magic Wand is because of some rumors they might have heard. The most infamous of them all being “it will numb you." This cannot be further from the truth! Our bodies love different sensations and the vibration from the Magic Wand is just a new sensation that should be slowly introduced. Why slowly? Since wands as a whole are some power packers, your body needs time to acclimate to this fun, new sensation. For example, if you go hiking often enough you will notice that your body needs time to get used to a new altitude. The Magic Wand works in the same way! Begin with the lower settings and gradually work your way up to the higher settings. There is no need to rush because that is part of the fun of exploring.

Another myth that I am sure we all might have had some concerns about at one point in time is how our significant other might feel towards having an adult toy. We as humans are such social and sexual beings that sometimes we forget that we are also individuals who have our own tastes that may differ from our significant others'. We have to remember that adult toys are not going to hold our hand or cuddle with us at night (if you like to be touched that is). Significant others may fear that the adult toy will replace them. While that may be true for some folks, others can rest assured that these things are just tools to help enhance our exploration. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t share in each other's pleasure, kinks and fetishes. Communication is key to anything you want in life. So tell your partner what you want! You want a wand, then tell them why and what features it has and how it can broaden both of your sexual experiences.

A Brief History

The Magic Wand story first begins when the Japanese company Hitachi introduced their original personal massager to the American consumer market in 1968 as the 'Hitachi Magic Wand,' also known as the 'Hitachi Massager.' It was an outlet-powered vibrating 'back massager' that soothed sore and aching muscles as well as provided all-over body relaxation with its vibrating massage head. It soon became the best selling personal massager and was available at most major department stores throughout America and Canada. At one time this was sold at Macy’s!

Hitachi Magic Wand Original 1968 version

With its single rocker switch, operating the massager was simple. Having the switch set to the middle position was off. Pushing the switch upwards turned on the massager to the high speed vibration mode, while pushing the switch downwards offered low speed vibrations. The Magic Wand operated on 110 volts and featured a six foot power cord with the standard American power plug. When it was introduced to Europe, they of course changed the plug style.

Over time, the Hitachi Magic Wand has morphed into a sleeker looking, extremely sought after product for women folk who would use it primarily for personal pleasure as a vibrator. It was touted as a must-have item by numerous well known and influential sex therapists, recommended by them to women and couples wanting to improve their sex life. The good thing was that the Magic Wand was still innocent enough looking like a back massager, so there was no need to hide it.

The Magic Wand was now recognized as one of the best vibrators for sexual pleasure due to its powerful rumbly vibrations, reliability, great build quality, while supplying guaranteed intense orgasms. Because of this, Hitachi came to a decision to cease production of the now famous Magic Wand in 2012. They didn't want the Hitachi brand associated with an adult sex toy that their massager had now become famous for. With its well deserved popularity among folks of all ages, there was backlash from consumers.

Magic Wand Original - Vibratex updated packaging

Enter Vibratex Inc, who are a USA-based manufacturer and distributor of premium adult toys. The owners of Vibratex had Japanese heritage and understood the predicament that Hitachi faced. After Vibratex approached Hitachi and negotiations were made, it was agreed that Hitachi would continue to manufacture the Magic Wand, but with the Hitachi brand omitted from the product and packaging. This is why some folks may still refer to the Magic Wand as the ‘Hitachi Magic Wand’.

The 'Hitachi Magic Wand' would be re-named the 'Magic Wand Original' with updated packaging, being available for sale in June 2013. Vibratex would become the exclusive distributor. Because it operates on 110 volts with a USA power plug, the Magic Wand Original was only available for sale and use in the USA and Canada but has since expanded to Australia and New Zealand, among other countries.

Which Wand To Choose?

Magic Wand Original plug-in massager

Magic Wand Original

The Magic Wand Original is fairly lightweight. It has to be plugged into an outlet and has a 6FT. cord. It only has two settings, low and high. The head is made of vinyl which is not the most hygienic but does provide a light textured sensation. It is not quiet by any means but packs a punch no matter if it's used on low or high. Someone who may have arthritis might benefit from using this particular one. This one is preferred among the older folk but younger folks can use this one too!

Magic Wand Rechargeable Vibrator

Magic Wand Rechargeable

In 2015, Hitachi in conjunction with Vibratex launched their first cordless version of the Magic Wand Original, naming it the Magic Wand Rechargeable. It offered the best of both worlds. It could be used as a cordless rechargeable massager, or while plugged in, used as a corded outlet powered massager.

It was upgraded to a smoother silicone massage head (more hygienic) and the inclusion of four vibration speeds and four vibration patterns, compared to its 2 speed powered sibling, it became an instant best seller! The cordless Magic Wand won numerous product awards over the next couple of years from Time Magazine, XBIZ, and more!

This version is much heavier than the original so it may not be good if you have dexterity issues or arthritis. The neck is very flexible and can provide the pressure and power one is looking for when you have graduated from the original. An awesome feature of this wand is that you can actually use it while it's charging! So you don’t have to wait to get the party started early.

Magic Wand Plus

Magic Wand Plus

In early 2019, the Magic Wand Plus was launched. It's nearly identical to the Magic Wand Rechargeable in looks, but is powered by a removable power cord for easier storage. The power cord locks into the base of the massager so it can't be pulled out of the socket when in use, and is released using a small button on the wand.

It features four vibrating massage speeds up to 6300 rpm (rotations per minute), but doesn't include vibration patterns like the Magic Wand Rechargeable does. The Magic Wand Plus is a hybrid between the Magic Wand Original and Magic Wand Rechargeable. It's more expensive than the Original, but cheaper than the Rechargeable. The weight is a bit heavier than the Original but not quite as heavy as the Rechargeable. This one is perfect for the power player, if you are like myself and you don’t want to mess around with patterns and just want pure vibration power!

Magic Wand Mini

Magic Wand Mini

In early 2022, the newest Magic Wand was introduced to the market, the Magic Wand Mini. Being shorter than its sibling, the Magic Wand Rechargeable, this high quality little powerhouse Magic Wand Mini has quickly become a bestseller. Compact enough for travel, but powerful enough to keep you extremely satisfied. The Magic Wand Mini offers up to 2.5 hours of cordless use on a full charge, while its intuitive buttons keep you in complete control of its three vibrating massage levels. This little guy is lightweight and a perfect fit to use between two bodies. Couples love this one!

Solo Play

Think about each style of Magic Wand as its own thing. What features do you want the most? How much power do you want or think you can handle? Will you also use it for its original purpose as a body massager? These are just a few questions to ask yourself before purchasing. Solo play with the Magic Wand can provide some of the most intense orgasms one has ever felt.

Like all pleasurable sexual activities, foreplay and warm-up are important. Start by touching yourself to get the blood flowing to your genitals before you add vibration. When you give your body time to warm up, you might find new exciting places to touch (with or without the wand) but the more blood flow you encourage, the stronger your orgasm will become!

The vulva generally speaking loves the sensation of vibration. While this might not be true for some folks, wands still provide pleasure and an almost sure fire way to get to the magic ‘O’. There are a lot of nerve endings and every one of them should be stimulated. The clitoris enjoys both direct and indirect stimulation. Choose the Magic Wand that you feel will best stimulate you.

Not only can it be used for massage, but because the vibrating head can be placed on the frenulum or the perineum it can provide incredible orgasms. Try pressing a wand on the low setting against the bottom of the shaft for a grand finale finish to oral or a hand job. Seriously, that's all you do! Just press and hold and it can lead to spectacular results. Find your sweet spot; it might be at the base, or it might be just under the head. And for a whole different sensation, try an attachment designed to fit over the head of a penis. Try the Stroke attachment from Le Wand. And as stated earlier please start slow and arouse yourself prior to get that blood flowing.

Partner Play

Bringing sex toys into the bedroom is finally becoming a new normal for many people—as it should. Nearly every vulva owner requires stimulation of the external clitoris to experience orgasm. Sex toys are a conduit to this necessary sexual touch, and vibrators are designed to help you orgasm. Any partner who is comfortable with themselves will not be intimidated by a sex toy, but rather open to experimentation. After all, who doesn't want their partner to come?! Consent is also a must. Ask first! No one wants a surprise power tool on their junk. Use the lowest setting first.

If you want to ease your partner into it, start by having them watch you use it on yourself. This can be a significant turn on. Seeing how you make yourself orgasm could be just what your partner needs to get on board the Magic Wand express. Wands are ideal for integrating into rope bondage. They are large enough to tie onto a partner, and with their wide heads and extreme power, are more likely to deliver effective stimulation even when they slip a little out of place.

Some positions to try out are missionary, doggy style, and open-legged spoon. Scissoring is also great to try with a wand between you and your partner. Grab the wand and hold it against your clitoris while your partner uses their tongue on the rest of your vulva. They can also lick up and down your labia. Make it more intense by having your partner place a stainless steel dildo, like the Pure Wand from Njoy, inside your vagina or anus while they lick around the opening. The weight of the toy will pull the entire pelvic floor, internal clitoris or prostate downwards, resulting in full body orgasms.

Want to push it further? The Magic Wand Mini is easy to maneuver, and a partner can tease you with it. Press it against a butt plug to make it vibrate and hold it at the base of the penis or strap on while they thrust. Get kinky by adding a chastity device and have your partner edge themselves or better yet, deny them that sweet release until you want them to achieve the magic ‘O’.

Attachments

With the addition of attachments, you can take your solo play to the next level. If you not only want to feel the power on the outside but on the inside as well, get yourself an attachment. A favorite is the G-Spot/P-Spot attachment from Le Wand. The Curve is a smooth silicone attachment with a weighted ball on the end to provide a great massage to the g-spot or prostate.

The Scylla Wand Attachment from Pris Toys is another great addition to the toy box. You can not only live out your tentacle dream but receive both vaginal and clitoral stimulation simultaneously! This can take your wand from just external to a dual stimulator.

The Flick is another one from Le Wand that is similar to a tongue and can provide the flick and lick you crave when the real deal isn’t available.

The Stroke from Le Wand (pictured above) is great for penis owners. It provides a curved shape to cover most of the shaft but also has a fun texture to add even more stimulation. Vulva owners can also benefit from this attachment by opening the ‘wings’ of the Stroke and using it like a grinding pad.

Lubricant

Many people will probably scoff at the idea of lube. Sometimes things happen and our bodies change as we age. So we just might need to add some lube for that extra slip or maybe our body is just not producing enough of its own. Either way, lube is a must for play as well as for your attachments. Most of the products mentioned are silicone and with the use of silicone toys comes specific lube requirements.

Water-based lube is great for anything and everything. This type of lube works best for silicone toys because it does not harm the material of the toy. This lube also aids in putting on and taking off attachments. Trust me, using lube on an attachment makes it much easier. A drawback of this kind of lube is that because our bodies are mostly water, anything that is water will absorb right back into our skin. So you will need to reapply after a while. Please do not use a silicone lube with your silicone items because it will destroy the material but also it could void the warranty with the manufacturer.

A favorite water-based lube is the Dame Aloe lubricant. This one has a nice silky texture and is infused with aloe vera to aid in moisture production. Don’t use it if you have an aloe allergy. A favorite among Pleasure Chest staff is Sutil Rich. This one is thick and will last longer than something that is more thin and liquidy. What is special about this lube is that it contains a naturally occurring ingredient called horny goat weed This amazing herb helps to increase blood flow and make your orgasms even more intense!

Pros & Cons

Power

With great power comes great responsibility. The Magic Wand can potentially add up to 6,300 rpm (rotations per minute). There are wands out there that can get more powerful such as the Doxy brand at 9,000 rpm. Think about if you want that much power to begin with. This could be too intense for someone who has never experienced vibration before. So choose wisely if you want to go all out.

Size

Like most things we created, we began with larger versions of them and eventually created smaller ones. Wands have gotten much smaller but that doesn’t mean they lack power. They are just cuter and more travel-friendly. The Itsy Bitsy Wand from Love To Love and the Ultra Wand Mini from Femme Funn are great ones to try out. The larger wands provide more power but are heavier and sometimes we don’t want to hold it or are unable to hold it due to a disability or other ailment.

Shape

The Magic Wand has a unique head shape. It's like a round square and can give direct or indirect stimulation. The edge allows you to angle it just right. Then you have the large Le Wand, which has a more rounded head shape. This shape gives more indirect stimulation so it provides more of a slow-gasm that one can build up to. The Dame Com Wand has a rounded head but the shape overall allows you to angle it even more, it's very ergonomic.

Plug-In Vs Cordless

Having a plug-in is great because you get the power that you crave and you don’t have to wait to have playtime. However, sometimes that pesky cord might not be long enough depending on the location you’re using your wand. Or perhaps there’s a particular position and/or angle you like to achieve orgasm. Think about which would be easier for you to handle.

Disability

If you are like myself and have a disability, the Magic Wand is one of the best accessible adult toys there is. Having different size options helps those with mobility issues to still get off. If you are visually impaired, the Magic Wand has a very intuitive design and well thought out button placement and size. The buttons have texture on them so it is very tactile to figure out what each button does. Anyone can use these and that is what makes Magic Wand one of the best in my book.

Aftercare & Cleaning

Aftercare is different for everyone. After you’ve just had an amazing solo session or partner play experience, you’ll want to have a few small things on hand to calm down from that orgasm high. Hydration is important, so be sure to have some water nearby. Sometimes we develop an appetite after sexual experiences. Have a light snack on your nightstand (I like gummy bears).

Cleaning up afterwards doesn’t have to be a chore. Having some toy wipes near are helpful to give your wand and yourself a quick bath before you fully clean up with some spray or foaming toy cleaner. Aneros Wipes are amazing because they disinfect your toy without alcohol. They are made of bamboo and can be flushed if you wish. They make a great personal wipe and makeup remover. Sliquid Shine is a great spray because it is 99% organic and doesn’t use any harsh chemicals to clean your toy. System Jo Foaming Toy Cleaner is great if you want to see the action. Just a few pumps, let it sit for about 3 minutes and then wipe with a clean cloth. DO NOT place your Magic Wand in or near water because this will damage it. It is not waterproof so using a toy cleaner is best.

The Magic Wand is not your fairy godmother's wand. So use it wisely and go out to get your magic ‘O’.
